KWEM brings tourism to West Memphis

KWEM brings tourism to West Memphis

West Memphis hopes to attract more tourism with the rich music history of the old KWEM radio station, that still stands on Broadway Street and encourage tourists to cross the bridge and see some of Arkansas’ musical contributions. The station is currently run through Mid-South Community College in West Memphis, Arkansas.

The college experimented with a few test broadcasts, and hopes to air a 24hour stream of music in the coming weeks. “We’re not nearly as interested in what it can do for the college as we are in what it can do for the community,” said Glen Fenter, Mid-South Community College President. The stream will feature only pre-recorded music by artists associated with KWEM in the 1940s and 1950s. In the future, Fenter hopes to vary the format and create space for experimentation by students, and possibly have more live performance slots.
