West Memphis teachers win education’s Oscar | People
A pair of West Memphis teachers earned big honors and big pay checks recently.
Avondale Elementary School’s Tamika Jordan and Bragg Elementary School's Tracy Valentine traveled to California this weekend to accept the Milken Educator Award.
It's awarded to teachers whose students are successful in the classroom and to teachers who inspire other educators.
Only about 50 teachers win the prize each year.
In fact, this award is such a big deal - it's been called the Oscar of the education world. And this big award comes with a big pay off. In addition to all the recognition, both women were handed checks for $25,000.
No word on how they plan to use the money. But in the past, winners have used the money to pay for new computers in their class rooms, scholarships for their students, and to further their own education.
