Ark. officials ready for meeting on reapportionment

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - Arkansas Attorney General Dustin McDaniel has set a March 16 date for a meeting with Gov. Mike Beebe and Secretary of State Mark Martin to begin the process of redrawing political district boundaries.

McDaniel serves on the Board of Apportionment with Beebe and Martin. The attorney general sent a letter Friday to his counterparts to propose the 8:30 a.m. meeting.

We as residents and everyday citizens deserve the best representation, and we want someone who understands our concerns and individual problems. We deserve that plain and simple.

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - A House panel is recommending that Arkansas create an annual sales tax holiday on clothing and other items to coincide with the start of the school year.

The House Revenue and Taxation Committee advanced the proposal by Republican Rep. Matthew Shepherd of El Dorado that would create the two-day tax holiday. The proposal would exempt clothing less than $100, accessories less than $50 and school supplies from sales taxes on the first Saturday and Sunday of August.

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - The Arkansas House has approved cutting taxes on capital gains, single-parent incomes and manufacturers' utility bills, brushing aside warnings from Gov. Mike Beebe that they could threaten the state's budget.

By a 53-43 vote, the House on Wednesday passed the proposal by Republican Rep. Ed Garner of Maumelle to eliminate the capital gains tax on new investments in Arkansas companies and property.

The Senate passed the bill last week, but Rep. Les "Skip" Carnine withheld the measure Monday because there were some technical issues that needed to be addressed.

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - The Arkansas House of Representative has decided that a former Harlem Globetrotter meets residency requirements to represent the eastern Arkansas district where he was elected.

House members on Thursday voted to accept the state Claims Commission's recommendation that Democrat Fred Smith be seated in the legislative session that begins Monday.
